Double Glazing for Timber Windows and Doors in Wellington

Here at Nice Glass, if you need double glazing, we install new timber sashes into your existing windows. Or if you would like to change the look of your window layout, we can remove the old timber sashes and insert new aluminum insert windows into your existing outer frame for a new look altogether.

There are a few basics rules that apply when investing in double glazing:

What is the condition of the head and sill flashings?

If you have existing timber sash windows, first you’ll need to check that the top head flashing and the bottom sill pan are not rusty, or leaking water on top of and underneath your window and door frames, as this traps moisture and causes damage.

Is the existing timber frame that you’re looking to replace suitable?

In most cases, your frame will only have a 3mm thick piece of glass in it, however that space will now need to fit a 16mm wide double-glazed unit in its place. In order to achieve this, we’ll need to cut very close to the tenon part of the mortise and tenon joint, which connects the adjoining pieces of timber at right angles. In many cases, a double-glazed unit is 160-230% heavier than the existing glass, which if not installed correctly, could leave you with sagging windows in need of full replacement.

An experienced team will replace the opening timber sashes with new more suitable ones and will not cut corners by screwing together your old timber windows. It’s important to have your frames checked by a qualified and reputable expert to ensure structural integrity and long-lasting windows whatever you choose.

Aluminium and Thermal Aluminium Insert Replacement Option

We’ll remove your fixed and opening timber sashes away from the existing timber joinery unit and insert the new aluminium frame by fixing it to the outer timber joinery rebate (frame).
